Introduction

One of the most known symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease is memory loss, were you aware that this happens for most aging adults? Memory loss can be seen in a variety of ways and does not always appear the same in every individual. It's important to be able to determine if any forgetfulness you experience as you age is normal or a symptom of possibly dementia. But how can you tell the two apart?

The Differences

Unlike normal aging, dementia is not normal and is the loss of cognitive functioning. As stated by Alzheimer's San Diego, here are some differences: Normal Aging

  • Making a bad decision occasionally

  • Missing a monthly payment

  • Forgetting which day it is and remembering it later

  • Sometimes forgetting which word to use

  • Losing things from time to time

  • Not being able to remember the name of an acquaintance

Alzheimer’s disease

  • Making poor judgments and decisions

  • Problems taking care of monthly bills

  • Losing track of the date or time of year

  • Trouble having a conversation

  • Misplacing things often and being unable to find them

  • Not recognizing or knowing names of family members

As you can see, a clear difference between the forgetfulness in the two is in the normal aging it is more occasionally while in Alzheimer's disease it is more consistent. For instance, a person with Alzheimer's disease would have memory loss that affects their everyday duties. Forgetfulness is not the only symptom of Alzheimer's but things such as issues with language skills and paying attention. This helps differentiate the two especially if you are an aging adult trying to recognize if your forgetfulness is normal.

Conclusion

Dementia is a big struggle for many elderly people and some may confuse their forgetfulness with either not having or having Alzheimer's disease. It's important to know that one has more of an affect on everyday life activities and comes with other symptoms. Aging is a very beautiful thing and it is so significant that we all learn to care for ourself. Remember you are not alone!
