Neural Trials: Exploring The “Change Blindness Challenge”

Introduction
Have you ever heard of the “Change Blindness Challenge”? It challenges our brain to process details that were present in the exact moment yet it failed to remember or recognize them. It’s a good way to see how your brain misses small details and sort of acts like a glitch because of how we notice them after that present moment. You can easily do this challenge by searching up a YouTube video using the search phase “ change blindness flipping image test”. I wanted to do this test myself and share my results with you all to really test the effectiveness of this type of challenge and also to learn something about the brain from it.
Methods
I will conduct this experiment by using a video about the “Change Blindness Challenge” and see if I can remember the small details that the video may ask for. I will use a video I found on YouTube and link the one I used below. I will watch the whole video and write my findings or anything I learned.
Findings
In the video “Change Blindness, The Flicker Task, & Sensory Memory“ by “ok science”, it performed a test with 2 images that are the same but have one difference and flashed a visual mask when switching between the two. It demonstrated that when you saw the images with a 0.1 second visual mask, it was easier to see the difference than with 1 second visual mask. I found finding the difference between the images with the 1 second delay much more challenging than with the 0.1 second delay. According to the video, this is due to the fact that the 1 second delay messes with our iconic memory, know for “everything in our visual sensory store.” On the contrary, the 0.1 delay allows us to retain “nearly everything stored in our visual sensory store.”
The video referred to this test as a flicker task, hence the fIickering images. It also explained that when someone is unable to recognize the changes between the 2 images, that is referred to as change blindness.
Conclusion
As the video continued, I believe it got even harder for me to recognize changes that I could’ve easily discovered without a visual mask in the way. The video helps show how our brain can experience change blindness and is a great way to learn about iconic memory. It provides a good challenge and I recommend you all to try it once since it is very fascinating. Lastly, it’s much easier to understand my findings once you try the challenge yourself.
