Introduction

I used to think that playing a musical instrument only helped with memory. However, I soon realized that it has a broader impact on the brain. I was always in awe of those who could play an instrument well. I even tried to learn the piano but eventually gave up. Even though I was not able to fully commit to playing an instrument, I wondered how it would help me manage stress.

Changes in Our Brain

Studies show that practicing a musical instrument helps cognitive development. In childhood, it improves spatial temporal skills, neural pathways, and certain brain structures. (Beyond the Music) Spatial temporal skills crucial for complex problem-solving. (Beyond the Music) Additionally, neural pathways that support memory and attention are strengthened, benefiting structures like the hippocampus which is responsible for memories. (Beyond the Music) Other brain structures that will experience change are those connected to motor control and auditory processing. (Beyond the Music) Examples of some structures are our cerebellum that coordinates movement and our Wernicke’s Area that handles language/speech and auditory processing.

In adults and seniors, playing an instrument can support your cognitive health and preserve executive functions that decline with age. (Beyond the Music) We use executive functioning in our lives every single day, and preserving it can significantly change a person's life. A few examples of executive functions are planning, organizing, and multitasking. (Beyond the Music)

Conclusion

As you can see, playing an instrument is highly beneficial for our cognitive health. Teens should be mindful of their development and consider this activity to support their brains. Playing an instrument is one of the key ways we can help our brain, and that is why is it so important to acknowledge it. Consistently improving your cognitive development through activities and healthy habits will benefit you more long term than you realize. Remember you are not alone!
